System Analysis & Design

• the concept of a system and, in particular, of the information system model including logical and physical components;
• the concept of the systems lifecycle as applied to information systems;

  databases.

Der Titel sagt schon, worum es hier geht. Eine Vorlesung wie "Softwaretechnik" hat zwar mehr zu bieten, aber am Unit Code sieht man, dass diese Unit für Dritt- oder Viertsemestler gedacht ist (2tes Jahr). Diese Unit war daher für mich Achtsemestler eine Wiederholung, aber gut. Man hat hier diverse Modelle zur Softwareentwicklung vorgestellt

MIS Risk Management

ups, ich glaube, diese Unit gibt es nicht mehr

Mir hat diese Unit deshalb gut gefallen, weil es über die vielen Stolpersteine und Risiken bei der Realisierung von IT-Projekten unterrichtete. Bei uns wäre es wahrscheinlich ein Wahlfach. Am Ende des Semesters wurde es dann noch recht technisch. Abgesehen von Planungsrisiken wurden die Risiken und Methoden vom Umgang mit Informationen vorgestellt. (Kryptographie, Zertifizierung)

Practical Software Development

Students apply a process of software development to building applications. They will apply object-oriented and component based methods of design, implement a variety of programming languages, design and build user interfaces.

Diese Unit habe ich nach einem Monat abgebrochen. Es wurde eine eigentlich einfache Programmieraufgabe gestellt. Die sollten wir in 4 Abschnitten in der Programmiersprache unserer Wahl lösen. Wir bekamen allerdings einen Riesenkatalog an Spezifikationen, mussten auch einen Katalog an Dokumentation abgeben, und: Nach jedem Teilabschnitt wurden die Spezifikationen geändert ! Das war mir einfach ein zu großer Overhead für ein kleines Programm.

Computer Graphics and Human Computer Interaction

Topics include graphics hardware and software, graphics algorithms, two (Tcl/Tk) and three (OpenGL) dimensional graphics, representations of objects, modelling, user interfaces, ray-tracing (POV-Ray) and image manipulation (The GIMP).

Super Unit, vielleicht auch deswegen, weil ich in Deutschland schon einmal Computergrafik gehört hatte und wir nicht viel Praktisches gemacht hatten. Hier gab's dicke Programmieraufgaben!

Contemporary Information Systems Issues

Diese Unit bereitet die australischen Studenten auf ihre Master-Thesis vor. Man schreibt eine Literaturübersicht und eine Abhandlung über ein aktuelles IS-Thema und hält zwei entsprechende Vorträge. Die Unit ist eine Honours Unit, daher habe ich offiziell keinen Creditpoint bekommen, weil ich als Undergraduate Student eingeschrieben war.

Advanced Web and Internet Programming

This unit focuses on WWW and Internet programming in Java. It provides students with an introduction to the concepts and technologies of the World Wide Web and the Internet, as well as related skills with HTML. Students concentrate on the Java programming language and will make use of the Java Development Kit to design and implement Java applets and applications on the Internet. It covers object-oriented Java programming for graphical user interface, multimedia, database and networking. Some advanced topics in Java are also addressed.

Wer hat schonmal eine Server-/Clientanwendung mit Java geschrieben? Alle, die hier mitgemacht haben! Der Rest der Unit waren: Standardthemen des Webdesigns, Schreiben von Java-Applets. Das Networking mit Java war aber ein echtes Highlight.

Computer Networks

The unit covers networks and their goals; services provided to end-to-end users; network architectures; the ISO/OSI Reference Model; the Internet protocol stack; the role of client-server model; communication at the application layer; end-to-end communication; the transport layer;
selecting a route; the network layer; dealing with errors; the data link layer; transmitting bits on a medium; supporting an application; presentation and application layers, in particular communication security and authentication; local area networks; network management; and fast computer networks. Students will learn the basic concepts and roles of communication and user-oriented protocols, be able to select a local area network and design simple protocols for a given environment, and be capable of tracking current and future trends in computer networks. Laboratory exercises will allow the student to acquire hands-on experience with networks based on Windows and Linux.

Das war auch eine klasse Unit. Wir haben uns nicht lange mit theoretischen Möglichkeiten der Zukunft aufgehalten, sondern haben das OSI-Modell rauf- und runterstudiert. (immer mit Praxisbezug, dem Vernetzen eines ganzen Computerraumes mit allen wichtigen Netzwerkdiensten inklusive)

Compilers

Honours Unit

Diese Unit wird nicht als Undergraduate Unit angeboten. Ich fand sie nur noch im Lehrplan der Honours Studies. Ich konnte netterweise ohne eine offizielle Einschreibung hier teilnehmen (habe dann auch keinen Creditpoint gutgeschrieben bekommen).
Da alle Honours Units zeitmäßig nur ein halbes Semester dauern, war auch Compilers etwas abgespeckt. Wir hatten jedoch eine tolle Aufgabe zu lösen: Man gab uns ein C-Framework, mit dem man eine Pascal-ähnliche Sprache compilieren konnte, und wir sollten den Compiler so erweitern, dass er Funktionsaufrufe übersetzen kann.
