Geelong

Eastern Beach

The Deakin University has got several campuses in the vicinity of Melbourne. Apart from the two "branches" in Burwood and Toorak there is another campus in Warrnambool and two more in Geelong (Waurn Ponds, Waterfront). (article about Geelong)

Corio Bay

I now landed in Geelong and I have to admit that the second largest city of Victoria became my favourite. It is situated next to the Corio Bay (merges with Port Phillips Bay), within one hour you are in Melbourne and the Surfcoast is just 15 minutes away. Geelong looks very modern and urban, nevertheless the mentality of its residents is still very rural and relaxt.
Since I spent most of the time of my stay studying (!) in Geelong, I don't want to omit this part. Here you can see the crazy guys I am studying with, and the everyday's madness of a life in this city.

Living on Res

The student dormitory (residence) on the uni's premises was a good thing. First of all, you didn't have to worry about any accommodation upon arrival, but you could already book your room before you leave, and secondly you are in immediate contact to about 400 students. In the section about the australian winter you can see, how I was doing there.
I can still find pictures, which I wanted to upload... :

Friends

The Germans are coming to Geelong. Meanwhile, we are eight altogether. How does that work? In the beginning there were Toby and Lena. These are not german synonyms for Adam and Eve. No, Toby and Lena already have been here for one year before I came and are enrolled as international students since then. And then there came Heiko, Monika and Andreas from our home university. Furthermore there are two more from Northern Germany at the moment.
We (Monika, Heiko and myself) are renting a shared house and revive same german eating and drinking cultures, whenever we are not on the phone to Germany. ;-)

The following persons have all have had to agree, that they are displayed on this web page.

roommate _Heiko_

He came, and disappeared again straight away. For doing his Australia round-travel in his Toyota Tarago. He also took his girl-friend with him. Now we got him back and have to realise with fright that he is collecting dirty water.

roommate _Monika_

Monika is the only woman in our house, but that doesn't matter. As her roommates, we could determine, that her hobbies are - amongst other things - cars bristling with cylinder capacity (Ford Falcon, 3.9l) and being on the phone. Sometimes we catch her on the phone when the ordinary student usually has some deep sleep (7-9 am).

rapper "Santa Claus" _Toby_

Toby already lives long enough in Australia to gain a very "easy-going" attitude. Maybe the bavarian background made it a little bit easier. One unbeatable fun factor in Geelong are his "Santa Claus" parties with didgeridoo solos.

surfchick _Lena_

Toby's girl-friend Lena was one of the first girls I saw on a surfboard. They say, she looks very german, but she wants to change that soon (!). It's also due to her hospitality, that we always felt welcome in Toby's house.

rasta _Mark_

He comes from Singapore, finished his studies in Australia, but he discovered a new lifestyle. Whenever he finds the time, he goes surfing in Torquay or Jan Juc and relaxes with Rasta-music at the end of the day. His surfboard "Rasta" is the biggest around here and he surfs every wave with it.

salsa dancer _Carl_

Carl is a finnish exchange student and was here from the very beginning, too. He is pretty much on the move and a persistent dancer and wodka drinker. He is almost a guarantee for a funny night. He moved to Melbourne for his second semester, because Geelong was too boring for him. (?)

Garden Street

Garden St

It took a little bit of good luck, but now, Monika, Heiko and myself are renting a 3 bedroom house in the Garden Street. Usually, landlords don't sign 6-month leases and are very precautious with international students. :-)
The suburb East Geelong is pretty close to the city and we can do some shopping by walking there. $220 per week is still a good deal for a house, too.

Nr 109

On the 19.4.02, Heiko woke up at about 4 o'clock in the morning because there was a bright light behind his window. Somebody parked a car in the alley between our's and our neighbor's house and put probably petrol over it and set it on fire.
Our holey fence didn't get damaged, but one wall of the neighbor house was on fire.

It doesn't take you long to become a member here. Riding on some watersport gear behind a boat on the Barwon River every Friday afternoon, while the BBQ on the landing stage is running, and drinking a beer during the breaks ??

Icehockey Deakin

This semester they founded the Deakin Icehockey Club, and of course, I joined it.
Sven was so kind and brought my ice skates from Germany with him. Now, our team Vanilla Ice can go and kick ass !

Kitesurfing

Unfortunately, I am going kitesurfing far too less. So there are not many pictures from the local spots Point Henry (Geelong) and Point Danger (Torquay) yet.
